Before you leave the house
The worst release day is the one where you drive forty minutes for something that sold out at ten past nine. Most of that is avoidable, and almost none of it needs a phone call. Our live shelf is the same list the till sees, so when something goes it comes off the page. Check what is actually on the shelf before you set off, not after.
If the thing you want is not listed yet, that is worth knowing too. Stock we are expecting does not appear until it is physically behind the counter, because a page that promises a box nobody has opened is worse than no page at all.
- Whether the set is on the shelf yet, and how many are left
- The opening hours for that day — release mornings often start earlier
- Whether there is a launch event, and whether it needs a ticket
What to bring
- A budget decided before you arrive, rather than in the queue
- A way to pay that is not only cash — the card machine is quicker on a busy morning
- Something to carry sleeved cards in, if you are buying singles
- Patience for the first hour. It genuinely does thin out.

How release morning actually runs
Doors open, and for the first hour there is a queue. Nothing is held back for people who are not standing in it — no reserving over the phone, no side pile under the counter — because the only fair version of release day is the one where queueing means something.
Sealed product is limited per person on the first day. That is not a sales tactic. It is the only way the twentieth person through the door sees a shelf rather than an empty rail.
The people who queue in January are the people who come back in March. Look after them and the rest takes care of itself.
Behind the counter, most release weekends
If you are building for the launch event
Bring a decklist on paper. Launch events here are casual, but a written list saves the judge ten minutes and saves you a game loss. The format is the plain one — one card per line as 4 Card Name, grouped, with a total at the bottom. Anything close to this is fine:
Pokemon (12)
4 Sprigatito
3 Floragato
3 Meowscarada ex
2 Fezandipiti ex
Trainer (34)
4 Arven
4 Iono
3 Boss's Orders
4 Ultra Ball
4 Nest Ball
3 Rare Candy
2 Super Rod
4 Buddy-Buddy Poffin
3 Earthen Vessel
3 Switch
Energy (14)
10 Grass Energy
4 Double Turbo Energy
Total: 60
If you are new to the format, the official card database is the easiest place to check what is currently legal: the Pokémon TCG site.
Watch the set before you buy it
Ten minutes of the official trailer will tell you more about whether a set is for you than an hour of scrolling will. Watch it, work out what you are actually chasing, and buy that instead of buying everything and hoping.
A note on this page
This is the DiscoverTCG demo shop, so there is no real counter behind this post — it exists so shops can see what one of these can hold. Every part of it was made with the tools any claimed shop already has: headings, two kinds of list, a quote, a photo with alt text, a divider, a code block, an allow-listed video and two links. None of it was hand-coded, and none of it needed anything a shop cannot reach from the Posts tab.
